Engine rebuild pt6...

Timing cover, timing cover... I've spent lots of time trying the cleaning my old one, so when I saw a new one on Rimmer Bros clearance sale for a £10 I bought one!

I say new - it came in a sealed box with blue BL logo on it, so new thirty years ago maybe.

I'm going to refit my electric fan kit, so I don't need to install the top pulley assembly, viscous coupling and fan blades - to cover the casting flanges I cutout a plate from 3mm aluminium.

Fitted the cover with the newly painted timing marks plate and the cleaned alternator brackets. Also fitted the front lifting eye.

Cleaning, cleaning, cleaning...

In preparation for the rebuild everything needs cleaning, so with the ultrasonic cleaner set a 99 minutes I started with the camshaft caps and bolts, crank big caps, cylinder head studs, bolts washers and on and on and on...

The timing cover has been soaking for about a week in degreaser and still very dirty - I think this going to need blasting or something.

Engine breakdown... pt13

Timing chain assembly and cover – I started by removing the crankshaft pulley, wedging the crank with a block of wood and undoing the large bolt.

By removing the remaining bolts I lifted off the cover and started undoing all the bolts holding the gear assembly, chain guides and timing chain tensioner. Using a allen key to remove the jackshaft keep plate I then slipped out the jackshaft.

I dropped some the bits into the ultrasonic clean which does a good job given enough time.
