Engine rebuild pt5...

Fitted the recon water pump into block and with a selection of gaskets to get the correct clearance between the pump top bolt and the inside cover flange.

Also cleaned and fitted the oil cooler transfer housing adaptor to the block - fitted the oil pressure switch/pressure gauge T pipe - I going to refit the Smiths gauges I had removed when stripping car years ago. The oil cooler also has a temperature gauge and two others I have are a vacuum and water temperature if my memory recalls - I think I need to go and find them!

Dropped in the distributor and cam cover for these pics - looking good.

Engine rebuild pt4...

New parts delivered today from Robsport - recon water pump and oil pump O rings and drive shaft.

Feeling the movement of the recon water pump it was a good move to replace my old one. Popped over to my local post office and posted it back for my exchange refund.

Wiped down the oil pump and lubricated it with some STP oil, I reassembled the pump using the new O rings and bolted it to the engine block. Then together with a new filter, I fitted the oil filter bowl.

With a new gasket I then fitted the oil pick-up pipe/strainer - all the oily bits are coming together!

Donor stripping...

Two parts I wanted off the donor car - the water pipe from the heater to the water pump/inlet manifold and the water pump.

My water pipe is corroded with small pin holes around where the hoses finished - and the water pump that I had dropped smashing the impeller.

I started by removing the air filter box, fuel line, linkage and draining the water. Unbolted the inlet manifold with carbs in place, then stripped off the water pipe and removed the cover to the pump.

Another 12 vane pump which means I can use my cleaned and painted cover - my water pump just lifted out but this one didn't want to budge.

The workshop manual shows a special tool which screws into the top with a heavy weight and rod to slide and pull it out. So a bit like Blue Peter with some old stud, a weight and metal strips I fashioned my special tool. Worked like a dream.

I cleaned up the water pipe and gave it a coat of Kurust, the water pump is boxed in bubble wrap!

Water pump disaster...

While do other things I'm putting parts into the cleaner - today the water pump which was fine until I dropped it on to the garage brick floor and cracked the impeller!

£180 new unit or £110 exchange unit - not pleased with myself.

Engine breakdown... pt4

With the inlet manifold off I had access to the water pump. Removing the three bolts and a couple gently taps with my hide hammer to split the joint the cover lifted away, then using a spanner I turned the pump clockwise it lifted out.

At each stage today I've been cleaning off the old gaskets and bagging the items up with the bolts, washers and brackets etc.

I will need to check the pump is ok and overhaul if required.
