So over the last year or so when meeting up with my fellow members of the "Black Finger Nail Gang" Pete and Dick at our local TR Register gathering - we have had many conversations about me doing the welding on the car.
Having never had the need or knowhow to weld, I was angling for one of them help or do it for me.
No such luck - instead I had a generous offer to come over for the days training by Pete. When I arrived all the equipment was laid out and explained what it was used for.
After some safety instruction it was time for my first mig weld. The first couple goes were what you would expect but after a while not too bad.
So far this was all done with welder setup for me - now it was my turn! To show me the affects of no air or gas, amps turned up and down, fast and slow wire speed and clean and rusty material.
I had a go at stitching and angle welding (90 degrees) and finally butt welding – I was a little worried about this to start!
Many many thanks to Pete and Dick for a great day - I'm now looking for a mig welder and equipment so I can practice!
This is my record of the restoration of my 1977 Triumph TR7, I bought the car in 1983 for £1500. Over the four years of driving it I had got married, moved to a 110 year old cottage in need of renovation and given a new company car. The TR was parked in the garage (1987) at the end of the garden. I always joked saying "that one day I put it back on the road". Twenty-four years later (Nov 2011) that day has arrived - wish me luck.
